Letter from the President

Dear Members of the Midwest Surgical Association,

I invite you to attend the August 1-4, 2010 meeting of the Midwest Surgical Association at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your president this year. I would like to update you on some changes in the organization in this transitional year. Our clearinghouse director, Marcia Langstraat, who has served us so diligently these last ten years is retiring in August. We will miss her dearly. The council has decided to proceed with a management firm, LP etc, to take over her position. LP etc also serves Central Surgical and Western Surgical Associations. They come highly recommended. To help with this transition, please make sure we have your e-mail address as well as any address changes. E-mail to langstmr2@msn.com so we will have current information for all members.

Dr. Cirocco has been planning a busy social agenda including the 5K run, the tennis and golf tournaments, and a return to Fort Mackinac for a Tuesday evening barbeque. The scientific program will feature a poster competition, a "New Member" paper competition, and a Resident competition. A record number of 112 abstracts were submitted to the program committee for the 2010 meeting. The invited speakers will feature Kirby Bland, M.D., Editor-In-Chief of the American Journal of Surgery, and David Hoyt, M.D., new executive director of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hoyt will be our first lecturer for the Scott Woods Memorial Lectureship.

All manuscripts from papers presented at the 2009 meeting were published in the March 2010 issue of the American Journal of Surgery. The Midwest Surgical Association plans to continue this relationship with the journal. The abstracts from papers and posters to be presented at the August 2010 meeting can be viewed at the Members Only portion of this website. Please contact the MSA if you need the username and password. Program books will be distributed at the meeting on Mackinac Island. We look forward to another family-friendly meeting and hope that you are able to join us.
